On Comics….and What You’re Missing Out On

I remember when I bought my first comic book.  I was 9 years old and obsessed with the X-Men.  It was the cartoon on Fox that showed me what a mutant was, but it was the comic book that really showed me what they were all about.  I consumed comics on a weekly basis for years and years.  I knew the day my favorite books next issue would come out, and expanded my taste from “Only X-Men” to the whole Marvel universe.

There is a missconception about comics, that they are made for kids.  Even after the Billions and Billions of dollars generated with the Marvel and DC Movies that have been coming out,  People still see something “Wrong” about actually picking up the source material.  It’s a shame really because The comic industry as a whole has been getting more and more adult for the past 20 years.

Now Marvel still walks a grey line with their X titles and other books.  A lot of New readers start with Marvel…this means that they do have a lot of young readers.  However their books still deal with very adult issues and the personal relationships between the super heroes.  Persecution, Bigotry, and Corruption are just a few of the themes you will find in any one of Marvel’s many many books.

But there are other Publishers that focus almost primarily on adult material.  Like DC’S Vertigo or Image Comics.  These comics have very intricate plot lines, Violence, Cussing, and most of them aren’t even the “Cheesy” super hero team-up books that are always attached to the Media.

If you scoff at Comics as if they are childs play, you are in turn are doing yourself a disservice.  You are missing out on some absolutely amazing stories that hold up against some of the biggest blockbusters, Novels, or TV shows (Walking Dead Anyone?).  There is a reason why the avengers made an insane amount of money, and why your parents watch the Walking Dead: It’s because the source material holds up on it’s own.

If you are intersted in getting In to Comics and have Never read one, or maybe just want to know some good series;  Here are a few I highly recommend:

1.  Saga (Image Comics)
There isn’t words to describe the actual experience of this Book, but I’ll try to sell you anyways. It’s a Love story between two people who’s races are at war with eachother, with magic, flying trees, a babysitter ghost, hot spider-bounty hunters, and a cat that can tell if you’re lying. It may sound silly, but it works so incredibly well.  Also a good read for the Noobiest of comic Noobs.

2.  East of West (Image Comics)
It’s about a bunch of ass-hat politicians trying to bring about the apocalypse by working with 3 of the 4 horsemen.  But they pissed off Death, the last Horseman, who is running around killing everyone that screwed him over.  Sci-Fi western and it is AMAZING.

3.  The Wake (Vertigo)
The Wake is about mermaids………..crazy killer mermaids!!!!  This description doesn’t do it justice, but it’s worth your time and money.

Here’s three titles to get you started.  You’re welcome in advance for the amazing ride you’re about to take.
