Elli-torial: Vacation and the Great Reset

Vacation, the thing we all want seemingly all the time while never actually having one. In an article written in December 2021, 55% of Americans don’t use their PTO (Paid Time Off). Being the workaholic I am, I can understand if you’re in a sweet workflow it’s hard to stop. But what happens when your workflow is all you know? What happens when your routine begins to weigh on you? Do you ignore your body or your emotions and just power through the bumpy road on the Struggle Bus, OR do you give yourself the much needed rest I, I mean You deserve? So for this week’s Elli-torial, I want to talk about why giving yourself time off is not only good for you, but can also help you set up what I’m deeming “The Great Reset.”

Aloha! That’s vacation slang for “uuuuuhhhh saaaaah dude.” I’m currently writing this post down south at our grandfather’s old home in sunny but not melt your Whittier, CA. With an iced matcha tea from our go-to coffee shop in Fullerton, I’m sitting outside in the cabana in my newest summer tank ready for relaxation and vibes.

During the past 6 months of  The Drew Show, I have felt like it has been some of the best on-air work both Drew and I have done. Energies have been more positive and overall I feel we’ve had even more participation and opportunities to talk to all sorts of people. With all that said, that doesn’t mean it is always easy. You truly never get used to waking up five days a week at 4:45 am. Sure coffee is great but by 2 o’clock you’re fighting to stay conscious. Now I have stated plenty of times in the past that I am a creature of habit. I need a schedule in order to function properly, and I feel that a schedule/routine is essential to a productive day. HOWEVER, that is not to say my schedule doesn’t body check the s**t out of me after a while. Everything from waking up, going to bed at a reasonable hour, eating properly, to feeling motivated about honestly anything just feels like it’s dragging you down. So what are we to do when we feel our routine turning on us?

We give ourselves time for The Great Reset

Now, what exactly is The Great Reset? Well, it is exactly what it sounds like, a great reset of your personal settings. A way to get yourself away from your daily schedule and give yourself time to reassess the things that work in your life, and the issues that need to be addressed. Have you noticed that you’ve been wanting to try something but it doesn’t fit in your schedule? Boom, the great reset lets you address that now with no restraints. Feel like you haven’t been able to see friends or just get away from work? Say less homie, the great reset lets you have the availability to catch up with people. Feel like you’re in a workout slump? You guessed it, the great reset lets you take time away from the gym to not only give your body some much needed rest but can also help you devise a new plan of attack. Just need a handful of days to decompress? That is what the great reset is all about!

Elliott, what has this Great Reset done for you then?

For starters, it’s let me SLEEP IN! My god did I miss sleeping in until 9 am. That alone has helped tremendously, sure you can feel a little groggy, but the overall feeling of a relaxed morning goes a long way. It has also given me time to catch up with friends I haven’t seen in months/years. This past week I caught up with two friends I haven’t seen probably since 2021 and just seeing and catching up with them helped remind me of the importance a positive group can have on you. I’ve gotten into a new hobby. I have randomly been at the driving range over the last few months but after playing a 9-hole course, I am officially IN on golf. Now every Tuesday a group of us will be going to the range and once a month, will be hitting the course, something I never saw myself doing prior to this year. I’ve gotten a chance to review my work. This week we have been running “Best of,” where we play some of our favorite memories over the past six months. While setting those shows up, I have gone over HOURS of Drew Show content. I can’t tell you the number of times I used “um, like, so,” and other crutch words. Though you always feel worried about not being on-air, taking the time off to review gives you clarity on what you need to improve on, all while having a fresh mindset coming back. Lastly, it let me remember what it’s like to have a nightlife again! Typically because of my schedule, I don’t go out because it can be too tough waking up the next morning and there is nothing worse than trying to talk hungover. This week has let me go out and actually enjoy my time out without the worry of a curfew, which made this week’s Soundhouse one for the books! (Thank you Jagwar Twin and everyone involved you guys were awesome, also shout out to Shreddy Thompson and your sick mullet).

The Great Reset is a way for us to take a step back and look at our avatars with a chance to improve them. It doesn’t happen often, but when the opportunity presents itself, I highly recommend you give yourself the time your body deserves. Whether you go out and party five nights in a row, or you homebody it up, give yourself the time it needs to relax, decompress, and adjust. Taking that step back can give you some much needed clarity, something that can feel is missing when you’re in the thick of it with your day-to-day routine.

So cheers. Raise a glass, put on your sun hat, pop on those shades, and exhale. Reset your batteries, go on Do Not Disturb, and recalibrate. Now I’m gonna get a wicked sunburn and shred some gnar so enjoy your weekend and know that The Drew Show will be back ready to go Monday morning at 6!
