Elli-torial: The Legend of Cody Maverick Part 1

As many of you noticed, last week’s Elli-torial never went up, and for that I am sorry. The reason behind that though is what is inspiring this week’s edition of the blog series. On my travels through the lone star state, I came across who I and many others deem the Demigod of Dude. A force of unmatched levels of broness, an unknown entity of excellence, and quite possibly the inspiration behind the Disney classic ‘Johnny Tsunami.’ This man could alone cause a nationwide shortage in Gushers and cbd. So gather around everyone as I tell you the story, of the legend of Cody Maverick.

Once upon a time in the island state of Hawaii lived a surfer. Every morning he would wake up, hop in his 1968 Toyota Land Cruiser and rush to the nearest beach for some early morning Gnar. While he was waiting for the next wave he noticed something in the water. The man paddled toward it to find that a coconut was floating out at sea. Dazed and confused, he picked up the fruit, and as he did he felt the tide move behind him. A massive wave had begun to form. As he turned himself around to get into position he placed the now rescued little coconut in front of him as he picked up speed. The surfer proceeded to stand up on his board and discover a new level of getting pitted. While shredding the massive wave he decided to head toward the barrel of the wave. As he whipped his board and crouched into what seemed to be the perfect barrel, he then began to hear a voice. Almost as if it was Mother Nature herself, she revealed herself in the reflection of the wave. Mesmerized, all the surfer could do was ride in awe as she proceeded to bless him and his new companion. The wave crashes behind him as he made it back to shore coconut in hand.

Upon arriving at the shore he looked down at his new fuzzy friend and found himself wondering why he was so infatuated with this wandering coconut. Maybe it was the spiritual moment he had in the barrel of that wicked wave, but he decided to throw it in his Land Cruiser and go on about his day. No sitting in the co-pilot seat, it sat almost as if it was looking at him. The day goes by and as the Hawaiian sun began to set he sat in the sand and looked over the sea. As he watched the sun slowly sink into the horizon he noticed a woman walking along the shore. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing. She was a spitting image of the woman he saw in the wave. As if a sign from the wave gods he approached her and they were immediately infatuated with one another. When he asked her for her name she simply smiled and replied

“Kāna, Kāna Ipo.”

Their love blossomed and while this was happening something else was happening. That lost coconut began to grow. Over the next few months, the coconut slowly but steadily grew more and more. The couple couldn’t believe their eyes as to how big the coconut had gotten. One night as they were falling asleep the surfer noticed a light in the other room. Assuming he left a light on he got up to shut it off. What he saw, however, was the light of a miracle.

For that coconut was beaming with light, rays of its light shined out of its three face-like holes. He rushed back to wake up Kāna Ipo when he saw she was already awake. She walked toward the gleaming fruit and put it in her arms. As she did, the coconut began to crack open. All the surfer could do was watch as the light began to take shape. It was a child, their child. A boy born of the ocean and Gnar. A descendent of the Wave Gods, shaped by the love of a surfer and his Kāna Ipo. Still shocked, he approached the newborn and as he did the baby smiled and with a giggle

“Wuuuppaaahhh.”

The day Cody Maverick was born.
