Dating in 2023, where the tiniest of things can get you flamed on Tiktok. In this day and age where social media trends dominate your news feed, one trend or I should say trendy word that is popular right now is “ick.” Ick is typically used to express disgust in something. In 2023, ick is used to express disgust in people, more specifically, a total deal breaker. Now I know what you’re thinking,
“Elliott, it’s fair to have things that you don’t find attractive that can be deal breakers.”
And for the most part I agree with that, there are many reasons as to why some people just don’t mesh well. Poor communication skills, maybe not as driven as you’d like them to be, or maybe they just aren’t your physical type. These are all fair reasons as to why relationships can end or never get further than the “talking” phase.
The icksue (see what I did there) is that most ick are hilariously shallow. Though that is the point of the term ick, at what point do icks actually cause issues finding someone? Are icks real or are they more of a social trend that’s taken on a life of its own? So, what’s a kinda blogger supposed to do if he wants answers? Easy, go to the internet!
I found an article (link below) that covers the history behind the word and its influence in today’s modern time. A poll with 2,000 students was done to showcase these students’ biggest icks. The top 10 for both men and women are found in this and although these are based on college students, some of these icks feel very relatable. I feel it’s only fair to go over a few for both men and women.
The top icks for women were the following: I’ll go over the ones that stand out:
- Not paying on the first date
- Mansplaining
- Rude to waitstaff (an ick for anyone)
- Wearing socks in bed
- Gym mirror selfies (I agree)
Those were just a few, so now it’s only fair to show the top icks for men:
- Too much interest in Astrology (feels overplayed honestly)
- Not offering to pay for a meal
- Being on their phone too much
- Talking too much about an ex.
- Really long nails.
If you’d like to see the rest for both men and women or the rest of the survey, you can check out the rest of the article here:

Now that we’ve covered the younger generation of daters and their icks, how does it hold up to the New Rock Nation? Tuesday, The Drew Show went to the listeners to talk about their icks. Some icks, mostly from Drew, Jess, and myself, were shallow to say the least. From certain hairstyles, moles, crawfish etiquette, icks were all over the place but primarily found in the shallow end of the turn off pool. Listeners on the other hand, well they brought the tea and then some. Although I don’t have an issue talking about my icks I don’t necessarily feel it’s fair air out their responses… but i will link the podcast and let you listen for yourself.
Icks can vary from understandable to down right preposterous. Regardless of where you icks lie, know that we at The Drew Show thinks it’s fair for you to have your icks, just know too many can leave you becoming the ick yourself.
