On Tattoos…Good, Bad, or Otherwise

There is no denying that tattoos are now part of the mainstream.  What was once reserved for Service Men and Japanese Yakuza, tattoos are now so popular, you have grandmothers getting ink of their whole family tree on their back.  This is not a bad thing by any means, but in turn has developed a culture of pretentious tattoo snobs.

I have many tattoos.  I got my first one when I was 20 years old. I got my whole right forearm blasted on from wrist to elbow.  Needless to say I was in it deep after that.  I couldn’t stop……..I had to get more.  I have collected 24 so far in a span of 10 years.  I would say a good 30 % of my body has some ink in it. And I was lucky enough to have good artists administer my pain.  You would think after so many tattoo’s over the years that I wouldn’t feel the need to get more…anyone that does have a tattoo knows the opposite is true.

I want More.

I want a lot more.

Here’s the problem, I am getting sick of people dictating to me what are “Right” versus “Wrong” tattoos.  There are a lot of people that believe your ink has to have some deep underlining meaning.  Some epic story behind it, or some huge significance.  This isn’t true.

This is the question I get a lot.  “What do your tattoos mean”?
Now I always come up with some smart-ass response like:
It means I make brash decisions
It means I’m uneducated
It means I love attention
And even though all three of those statements may have truth to them, in all honesty it means I’m a sucker for pretty art on my body.

It’s ok to get a tattoo because it looks cool.
Own it.

Dont feed me some long drawn out story about how the Japanese dragon on your chest is your way of commemorating your graduation from Beauty school.

You got a dragon on your chest because it’s awesome.  You don’t need to make up some BS justification as to WHY you did it.  You did it because every day you wake up and look in the mirror you want to see that thing staring right back at you…..and that’s fine.

It’s not to say I don’t have any that are significant, or mean something to me, or have a story to them.  I do…..but that’s personal.

Your tattoos can tell a story, or just look good when you take off your shirt……..and both are just as valid as the other.

What do you think?  Make sure to comment below and throw out some topics for tomorrow’s blog.
